    Default African Crowned Crane

Another view of the African Crowned Crane taken this summer in Nashville. This one doesn't seem to have the burn out in the feathers that the other one had. I'm considering a crop of just the head and "shoulders" but the whole bird is magnificent, too. Question: is the photo sharp enough to allow for a closer crop? Thanks.

Hi Great looking bird - does look a little soft on my screen - some additional sharpening may help. As for the larger crop try it and see - your shutter speed at 1/80TH was a bit slow with a focal length of 250mm, you would have a sharper result with a faster shutter speed - you did not mention if you used a tripod or not.

    Hi Hazel

Great advice on the shutter speed !!! For this one you should have open the lens wide, I'm sure you might have been thinking on dof/quality but speed is the overriding factor. A higher ISO is also advised even is you get some noise... noise you can clean but can't take care of blur !!

I like the crop as presented since it has a great head angle/pose. Cropping this will really get you into trouble since the softness will be magnified. Even if it was sharp don't get use to making such large crops. For web presentation you can get away with it but not much good for prints !!!

    Hi Hazel
I like the composition...very good advice given by both Mr. Peters and Mr. Forns...My observation is that the capture angle is a little steep...

Thanks so much. I"m still learning about speed, etc. It still seems so very complicated right now but i'm sure it will come with time and practice.

Exposure looks good on this Hazel. Just a litle sharper and sometimes hard to get on eye level with your subjects. Keep practicing, you'll only get better:)
