Should be an excellent landscape/studio camera, but probably not for birders. At least not until we know how well it performs over iso400. Lots of pixels to play with, though!

A big issue with these newer high-MP cameras (Sony, Canon 5DmkII, Nikon D3x) is processing and storage of images. I am noticing a huge difference going from the 40D (10 mp) to the 50D (15 mp) in the speed of my dual processor computer to catalogue 50D images. When shooting I fill up 4 gb cards much faster and I have a lot more to download when I get home. Ultimately, my hard disk is filling up much faster. What is happening is that cameras are overtaking the other side of the technology- computers- that we rely on to do what we love to do. In wildlife photography as opposed to landscape or studio work, more images are usually taken at any one time for a variety of reasons. Imagine you're at Bosque and you make 1000 images with the D3x one great day at the highest RAW resolution setting. You would end up with about 35 gb of images to process! Imagine being there for a week! For this reason I don't think cameras like the D3x are best suited for wildlife photography, at least at their highest resolution settings.

Got a strong point there John !!! Imagine I could deal with the larger size files but my main concern is noise.

My D3 is working so well for not sure I'm ready to change. I was surprised at the price? Remember when Canon went from the s Mk2 to the s Mk3 there was not much change and the same has been true for other significant updates.

For the price of the D3X you can now purchase two D3's.
I do not believe that the camera is going to be twice as good as the D3

Canon sales of its 1DS mark iii are slow and I do not see a good future for a $8000.00 body is this economy

It will be the first professional Nikon Body that I will not be pre ordering

Oh Well glad I love my D3's

My D3 works very well for me. I might be interested in the D3x after I see the price drop about 20 or 25% which may occur quickly in this economy and after I see the noise performance at higher ISO.

In terms of computer capacity, I see that the D3X files open as 138mb 16 bit tiffs in photoshop. From my experience with Canon 1dsII files which open as 90 mb files in PS, it seems there will be a signficant drop off in processing speed with D3x files in PS>

i'm curious as well as to the file size when I get the 5d mark II since I shoot all my landscape shots in 3-5 image exposures for possible HDR...

a 12 gb card used to go far as far as a few days landscape shooting was concerned. not so much now I predict

Here are some large jpg files for various iso levels. Up to 800, it's pretty good. The detail is fantastic.

How many pixels do you need?
I have a 20x30 on my wall (yes it looks good) from a D2H 4MP file.
For my style the D300 and D700 really are all I need.
If you start with a quality image that is an image that is sharp, low noise and well exposed, it is amazing how large you can interpolate it.

    Good point Darth !!!

Remember John Shaw telling me the images he made with the 1D (2.7mp) Very large print of high quality !!! Sometimes we get lost in the megapixel shuffle !!!

With memory and storage so cheap these days, I don't find it much of an issue at all (1Ds3 user).

I very much agree with James. I get fantasic 50" prints from my D2X camera files. These prints are greater than any I was getting from 2 1/4 X 2 3/4 negs. My next camera body will probably be the D 300 for the ability to shoot higher ISO.

Nice but $8,000 for a camera that will be worth about $2000 in three years

Someone posted a hilarious video on YouTube using a clip from the new Tom Cruise / WWII movie with new subtitles:

    Hitler rants about the D3x!

    Classic. Made for Canon shooters!

Just checked and the footage was from an older film on Hitler produced I think in Germany.

That clips was hilarious.LOL I will be sticking with my D300 , for 8000 I would be buying a 400mm f2.8 VR if I had that kind of dinero available.

I think it is from "Downfall", aka "Der Untergang" in German.

    A movie of 2004.

You're right! Kind of embarassing for me, actually :D

One thing I just realized is that the D3x doesn't have sensor cleaning. How can Nikon not put sensor cleaning in its pro bodies? it's not 2003 any more...

That does seem like an important omission. I have been extremely impressed with the sensor cleaning on my 40D. I've had the body for a year now and have never had a dust spot. I am careful when I change lenses etc etc but I was expecting to have to clean my sensor at some stage. So far this has not been needed.

Your right John I think its a big deal The full sensor cameras do gather dust and is some areas like Bosque you need to clean them every night !!!
