Photographed about a 15 minute drive from my home. An endearing little bird and quite fearless - they often will fly into thier nest while you are still erecting a hide nearby!!
Canon EOS 5. Canon 100-300 F5.6L, Velvia 50, Flash x 2 - main unit at F11 and unit behind bird set at +1.5 stops compensation to provide some rim lighting. Hide. Tripod.

Lovely composition and precious subjects. In my opinion, it need a little more sharpening in the chicks face, actually, it may be the eye, the catch light is too big and diffused, giving the false impression of softness, an easy fix in your scan.
I think the sharpfocus is on the front of the tree here (it looks nicely detailed and sharp, like the front of the nest), explaining why the chicks and the adult bird look soft. Maybe a bit more sharpening on the eyes would help like Fabs suggested. The scene is lovely!
Such a sweet family moment captured. The adult bird's pose could not be better. I think the rim light was a bit strong, and the point of focus does seem to be at the front of the nest, leaving the chicks and the adult a bit soft.
