    Default Nikon D3x rumor

It is possible the D3 update (D3x?) will be announced in the next couple of weeks. Exciting news.

Ours have been on order for a few weeks and yesterday got word about a possible announcement (not official) from a good source. Can't wait for the first test since any improvement on the D3 must be a big deal !!!!

Many people are saying 12/1 but who knows for sure - 24 MP - but maybe noisier than D3 at higher ISO.

I am waiting for a new DX Nikon so have no real interest in a camera that likely will be more than $5000.

Allan I would love to see any kind of crop factor D3 Variant but don't think its going to happen !!!

Do use my D300 when I need the reach but firing speed is painfully slow at 14 bits. btw no clue on the price Imagine will be $5500. On most models the updates have had the same price.

Here in New England I need reach, reach, reach most of the time so I have never considered a D3 or D700. I have the 400 2.8, but I often think of a 600 VR.
They are so hard to get I sometimes think of a Canon 50d with the Canon 600 IS.

Seems to be all but confirmed now. They premanturely slipped the info in their own magazine.

Thom Hogan also has some info on his website.

I'm a Canon shooter but my wife shoots Nikon and has been anxiously awaiting the D3x. We just received an email from a Nikon insider friend of ours that reads as follows:

    Deb,

I had a D3X in my hands about three weeks ago. Basically a D3 with a 24.5 megapixel sensor. Nothing external distinguishing it from the D3 other than the X in the name.

Official announcement is now scheduled for December 1 - about two years later than originally planned!

XXXXX XXXXXX, a close friend who is a field tester for Nikon in Japan, says he prefers the D3 to the D3X due to the difference in color fidelity and saturation.

I have a D3X on order and expect delivery after the first of the year. Price is stated to be $5500.

In many ways, it sounds like the camera everyone expected....which is something of a disappointment, in many regards. I also think it surprising that HD video would not appear to be a part of this new body. Still, it should be a good camera body--I just don't know if it's "earth shattering" in the way that the D3 really was/still is.

No longer a rumor. And it's a $8000 camera. Who is buying? :)

Official sample photos in case you haven't seen them:

    Somehow none was taken with 18-200, not even a 70-200 f2.8 :D:D:D

Apparently the price was a surprise to a lot of people, including top guys at NPS. Have received emails saying that NPS has been receiving emails from pro Nikon users who are very upset and talk of switching to Canon. Many, including my wife, are drawing the line at $8000.00 for a camera with a life of about 2 years.

A 5500 - 6000.00 price tag could have tempted some Canon users. As of now, it appears to have angered many Nikon pros who have waited for about 2 years for this camera to come out. We'll see what happens after the anger subsides.

Why would they be surprised or think of switching?

Canon's 1D3 Mk3 is almost $7000, so would you sell all your stuff at a loss to save $1k?

I think it is easier to pick up the 5DII body and the new 24mm and operate alongside the Nikon system. I don't think many people would be able to afford a 8000 USD price tag when it is bound to be upgraded within 2 years. I don't think there would be complete dominance in all the segments by one company anymore.

Exactly. And with Sony pushing a 24 megapixel body using almost the same sensor (see below) for a price comparable to the 5D Mk II, it's disappointing that Nikon wouldn't decide to be competitive with Canon and push the price down to something like $6k for its new flagship. Back when Canon was the only game in town with full-frame camera bodies (not to completely discount Contax and Kodak) they could charge whatever they wanted, but they shouldn't be able to do that anymore, and Nikon should have proven it to them.

Thom Hogan has an interesting post about the D3x, and goes into the question of whether the D3x is really just an overpriced Sony A900 (concerning the sensor, that is). http://www.bythom.com/nikond3xcomments.htm

This depends on your photo application, The 5DII body is an excellent portrait, landscape, still subject camera. But it would not work for bird photography because of the AF limitations and the drive speed.
