Just for kicks, here is a photo I took at Portland Head Light last October viewed side by side with the Ed Hopper Classic watercolor from 1927. I wish I had a copy to try to duplicate the angle, but it is amazing on how much the scape has changed in 87 years ....

Interesting juxtaposition. Too bad the fence is there now. Of course in a painting, you can just leave that out - hey isn't that like cloning out the fence in PS?

I noted that too. The thing is that there is no higher vantage point from that side of the light. I was at the highest point. the trail leads the other way down towards the rocks.

I'm curious as to where exactly he was

    Hey Michael,
Neat comparison........but i think much artistic licence was taken........it appears that he was at a higher vantage point..................but look at the water line though the roof on his image..........it is higher than yours........so he would have to be lower than you to get the water level higher!!! Short of major global warming all those years ago.......my bet is "Artistic Licence!"

I'm with Al...I would have thought there would be more commercial and less nature. It's nice to see it didn't turn out that way.

What a neat thing to be able to set your photo next to someone else's painting.
