this one flew by yesterday morning at green cay wetlands. figured i'd better post a bird before i got banned for all the metal birds!! low light conditions caused me to have to use ISO 800 to get some shutter speed which iwas still marginal. should i have gone higher?

    D300, 50-500 at 370mm, f/6.3, 1/400s, 0EV, ISO 800

all i did in pp was crop a little off the left, darken the bg to bring out some of the colors and lighten some of the shadows on the bird. and some NR on the bg.

thanks for looking and your comments are apppreciated.

    Sweet capture and image Doctor,
The colors are beautiful and the feather details are nice and sharp. I like the down wing position. You have good eye contact. and the soft, pale subdued multi colored hues of pinks and blues in the sky makes your duck pop...congrats...

Beautiful Harold, think all your specs captured the soft mood here!

I love everything about it except that the duck looks a bit muddled in color. I know it's a female mallard and they tend to be "muddled" but yours looks more gray than brown. Did you do any kind of curve change that might have affected the tone?

The bird's position and the detail, along with the colors and lighting are all beautiful. I even like the choice of speed here as it gives the wings a nice bit of motion without being overly blurred.

thanks jules! the bird was the one thing that i tried not to mess with. i think it looks grey because the light was flat.

and i swear it's a mottled duck!!! i may be able to boost the contrast a little in the duck but didnt want to bring in noise by doing that?

MUCH BETTER! That's exactly what I was talking about. I'm not sure what a mottled duck is but here in the Midwest, that baby is a female mallard. I've never seen another bird with the blue on its wings that wasn't a mallard. Or maybe I need to go get out my bird book???

Really exquisite, would make a lovely print. Personally I crop a bit off the bottom for more of a pano effect. I think version 2 is my choice.
