    Default Tripod Head Suggestions.

Although I have plenty of tripods, I am in need of a better tripod head. I have legs in all sizes but only have video heads, pan and tilt heads and a Manfortto 322RC2 ball head. The ball head is just usable with my 70-200 2.8 IS, but the 300 2.8 is too bulky for it.

From what I see the two that many use are the Wimberly II and the Mongoose 3.5a.
Assuming the heaviest lens I can see myself ever owning is the Canon 500 4.0 IS, or a very slight chance of the 400 2.8. Which head would you suggest?

It would depend on the application. If I'm not walking very far I like the full Wimberly, balances well and its safer to adjust after adding converters

With any head holding the lens on the side the chance of dropping must be greater. Can't go wrong with either. I have used my 600 on the Mongoose and some people do so as their only head !!!

I agree with Al. Wimberley II is best if weight is not a concern. Mongoose is best if weight is a concern.

Doug summed it up right and that is how I chose which one of mine to use. But given a choice, the Wimberley is superior.
