    Default Saker Falcon

    Hi There

Another shot taken at the Hawk Conservancy, but this time shot with a 1DMKIII at ISO rating of 3200, as it was about 10 minutes before sunset. The camera is one of the batch that has been manufactured with the sub mirror fix and the latest 1.3 firmware loaded. It was my first outing with the camera, but I have been shooting with a MKIIN for about a year.

First impressions are that the focus is similar to the MKIIN in bright light, but i have found it better in low light. The noise at high ISO's is also considerably better than the IIN. I hope to get some more shots when the weather improves over here but i am certainly pleased with the camera at a first impression.

An excellent flight shot....and the detail on the legs/feet really shine. I think the composition works well with this image. I've backed off ordering the MKIII a couple of times but images like this make me think that it might be time. I like the image.....and I'm extremely impressed at the lack of noise for ISO 3200. Did you do any noise reduction on this?

    Hi Lana

There was a little bit in Lighroom as i had tried to get a bit more detail under the wings by adding to the exposure by about +0.5 Stop. I post below a crop of the image at 100% straight off Lightroom no noise reduction no sharpening just plain vanilla to perhaps give you a better idea.

    Hi Alfred

Yes I had held off getting one when the stories broke about the AF, and I had had the use, albeit briefly, of one prior to the fix being announced and i didn't think much of that particular one as the AF was much worse than the MKIIN.

However being based in the UK it was the high ISO low noise that really interested me as my standard ISO on the IIN was 800 and i rarely shot less than 400 . So being able to go to 3200 on the MKIII and still get very usable images is the main reason for the upgrade.

No doubt in 18 months Canon will release something even better to trump the Nikon D3 but right now I am certainly happy with the camera.

Nice flight image here, John. You did well to get this speedster in flight coming at you. I wish the light was better and that the bird's right wing wasn't in shadow. The 1D3 is a great camera. I sent mine in to get the fix and used my 1D2n while it was gone. I really noticed the difference when I used the 1D2N. The 1D3 was better all around and I couldn''t wait to get mine back.
