After all the time and effort I took in approaching the bird I have to admit I am a little disappointed with this shot. I was pleased with the pose and I thought the light was going to be interesting as it was low and from the side. I feel there is insufficient light on the head and eye. I played around with curves and Shadows/Highlights but I guess you just can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. i.e you can't put in what wasn't there!!
I am thinking retrospectively here - maybe I should always take my flash gun and in this instance perhaps it would have made all the difference.

All comments welcome, thanks for looking

Yes on that observation! The one good thing you got with the side lighting here though is exceptional detail on the wing. The dark head, however (and as pointed out by yourself) is a pity. I might eliminate some of the spots at left.

Self crit spot on here, Jon. In this type of situation my flash and BB is mounted and ready to go before I get down in the wet stuff. The feather detail with that wing stretch is fantastic though. Agree with Dan on the dark spots on the left.
