    Default Female Red Crossbill

This image was taken one year ago today. It was a very cold, dark grey day in Algonquin Park (about -35 degrees C, -31 degrees F).

it has been cropped to about 40% of full frame from landscape format.

Sigma 50-500mm @500 on Manfroto Monopod. ISO 400, F9, 1/125 with fill flash.

I debated whether or not to clone out the OOF snow flakes but decided (perhaps wrongly) to leave them in.

Nice crop and lovely perch. Good head angle, and enough dof to keep everything sharp. Very nice subtle use of fill flash. Amazing that small birds can withstand those cold temperatures! Red crossbills are one of my favorite birds. Thanks for posting.

Glad you kept the snowflakes. Makes all the difference and adds atmosphere. Dave

Thank you everyone for your kind comments. This was a life list species for me and I was pleased to at least capture a few images of females. The males stayed out of photo range.

Waninick I've recalculated the Temperature conversion and it was actually -31 degrees F not -25! Thanks

    HI Stephen,

The composition works very well and the falling snow gives this image a special feeling to it.
