Hi Tom !!
I like the eye contact and pose Wish I could see more of the animal Can also suggest there is no need to close down to f 14, at f 5.6 you will have plenty dof and will give you higher shutter speed for safety!!! Excellent !!!
Tom,
Nice pose. I like the background. Is this a big crop? How far were you from the subject? I am trying to imagine the Dof with a lower aperture. Perhaps you were trying to get the flowers in focus as well. If I were handholding then I would have definitely brought down the aperture to ensure the maximum shutter speed possible. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers,

Many thanks Alfred for your kind comments and suggestions which are very much appreciated and valued.
I used f14 as I was trying to make the most of the heather fg as well as the Stag. The heather was about 1ft deep at that point and I was shooting uphill from a low perspective. This was one of several I took of him - others have him showing full leg.

About 20% has been cropped from the left border. I was about 45 feet [15 metres] away from him. This was one of several I took of him and I was trying to maximise that he he had now moved up the hill so he had the sky as a backdrop.

Tom,
I was checking from the dof point of view. If the subject is at 45 feet:
At f14: the Depth of field Near limit 43.3 ft Far limit 46.9 ft Total 3.64 ft In front of subject 1.75 ft (48%) Behind subject 1.89 ft (52%)
At f8: Depth of field Near limit 44 ft Far limit 46 ft Total 2.04 ft In front of subject 1 ft (49%) Behind subject 1.04 ft (51%)
In this case, the subject is not parallel to the image plane. It has turned back to look at you. So the greater dof that you achieve is used up in covering the Stage. If it were kind of standing parallel to you, then you would have got more flowers covered up. I hope you get what I am trying to point out.
I must confess that I dont use charts in the field. I just try to remember the approximate dof of my lens only at a few apertures and for the rest use kind of estimation.

Tom,
I like the composition and the DOF was right for the subject to get him all in focus.
Overall, I feel the image is too dark. Suggest levels (midtone slider to lighten it), curves (medium s-curve for contrast), Shadows/Highlights (to open up shadows). I tried it and makes a big difference IMO.
