Canon EOS 1D Mark II N, Canon 400mm DO lens mounted on a tripod. Manual mode. 1/250 sec. at f/22. 7 flash set-up at 1/32. Artificial background. Costa Rica.

This image is from my recent trip to Costa Rica. Hummingbirds' flight abilities are unique in the avian world. They can hover, fly backwards, make acrobatic steep banking turns, and can even fly upside down. They have the most flight muscles per body mass of any bird. I really enjoy capturing images of hummingbirds in out of the ordinary flight poses, such as this one.

Linda, very cool pose! Great job timing this. By the way, this was the green-crowned brilliant juvenile male.

Oops. You are absolutely right Greg. Was going to post a different image, and failed to change the name when I changed my mind!

It was so nice meeting you at Bosque de Paz. You can put me down as the second person who drove across Costa Rica following your directions who didn't have to call you on your cell for help! Wish I had also asked you for directions from Rancho to the airport.....somehow ended up in downtown San Jose at rush hour, completely lost. After driving the wrong way down a one-way street and also driving down a pedestrian walkway with scores of people waving at me, I finally did find the airport! Had a great time in Costa Rica, your adopted home.

Just amazing. Some tonal variation in the BG may be nice but just awesome to capture this.

Dear Linda, You should keep practicing this hummingbird stuff; you might get good at it one day if yo keep it up.

Seriously, this is spectacular; the leaving-the-feeder poses are simply astounding and you are the best in the world at capturing them...

ps: I get 1% credit here as I loaned Linda my 400 DO for her trip. In both of our opinions it is the finest hummingbird lens in the world, and as Bulletin readers know, I have been using mine a ton in a variety of situations and have been loving it.

Superb job Linda and what a n outstanding action you got in this image. I would crop a little bit on the right and at the top of the frame to avoid a centerd subject. One of your best from my point of view!!

Wonderful, if I had a lot of money I would certainly book a hummingbird addiction tour with you! Love the incredible pose and the colours captured! Would give Juan's cropping suggestion a try. Excellent shot!

Linda, I can just imagine the pedestrian walkway fiasco! I guess I owe you a t-shirt for your navigational skills :-)
