Does the toasted highlight ruin this for you?

Marbled Godwit at sunset, San Diego, CA. Canon 500mm f/4L IS lens with the EOS-50D on the Gitzo 3530 LS with the Mongoose M3.5. ISO 800 (a big mistake...). Evaluative metering at zero: 1/8000 sec. at f/4.

I had been photographing some Whimbrels in the last light of the day when I turned around and saw this. Obviously I should have lowered the ISO and subtracted a bit of light from the EXP.

Honestly Artie its not the toasted Highlight that bugs me ( I actually like how that highlight bleeds over the leg a bit) ...but its the URC that bothers me. The perfect silhouette looks great, and I love the undulating beach.

I like the light and silhouette and am with Daniel regarding the upper right.

Love the image and that fabulous color. Great composition. The toasted highlights make the image IMO, but the funky upper right stuff should go.

If I'm allowed an opinion I have to agree with Daniel and Axel about the URC in this image, but am very happy to see the quality of the 50-D in so many instances being really very good, congrats on this Artie it;s still beautiful.

    Artie,
I agree with the previous posters. I like the highlight at the bottom. Nice composition. Great colours.

Great silhouette against amazing colours. Have to agree with the others with the URC. Still well captured.

Looks pretty darned good to me! At first I wondered why you made reference to high ISO - I guessed you were indicating it was noisy as you had recently referred to a noise issue with the 50D but I couldn't see any noise problem! Then I realised (I think!) that had you used a lower ISO you would not have had so much burn out - especially around the right leg.
    Anyhow it looks a humdinger!

I hate too be the one to go left when everybody is going right, but I do think the burnt highlights are distracting here and feel they do tend to ruin the shot a little for me! Getting rid of the stuff in the URC is debatable IMO, can see it with or without although I would probably get rid of the top thingy in any case. Apart from that a really fine silhouette with a really nice pose! Was this a Dowitcher?

Hi John, Noise was not the issue. By being at ISO 800 and working wide open, the resulting shutter speed was 1/8000 sec. I would have been better off at ISO 250 on general principle. Lower the ISO would not have effected the exposure--as I noted, I needed to underexpose a bit.

And on a really, really fine point, if I did not have Safety Shift enabled, and I am not sure that it was, then 1/8000 sec. at f/4 might have actually represented some degree of overeposure as the camera could not choose a shutter speed higher than 1/8000 sec...

I am glad that you liked it. I pretty much like it too. Thanks all for their comments.

Hi, IMO I don't hate at all the stuff in the URC, what I don't like very much are the toasted highlights in the right bottom. Still, is nice.
