    Default Snowy Owl in Flight

Not the best head turn but I found this to be an interesting capture.

The sun had just come up behind me over the ocean and there were heavy clouds to the west. I've always been a sucker for contrast and I think that the darkness of the western sky offsets the bird nicely and helps it to stand out.

    Nikon D300, 500 AFS`VR, f 5.6, ISO 1250, 1/1250, CW metering, +.3 EV compensation.

Light, details and wing position are all great. I agree regarding the head angle. Do you have some frames photographed earlier in this series?

I agree about the head angle but would love to have this one in my files. Excellent exposure and detail. Love those eyes !!! Thanks for sharing Jim.

    Default Re: Other Frames

I have two frames from mere seconds (or portions thereof) earlier, but the subject was looking straight ahead.

Immediately after this frame, the bird turned his head to the left and flew off in that direction.

I like the pose and light, exposure looks great, but IQ doesn't seem very good. Could it be due too much shapening or a big crop... you tell me! Still, very nice! Congratulaitons!

Nice light and exposure. There is a noticeable halo around most of the bird. Without that I think the IQ would be much better.

Well, for me the head angle is OK...at least it is not looking away. Were you hoping for a straight-on look? The wing-down position is nice and you have nice light on your subject. I have to agree that the halo is distracting though...

Lovely as presented, I'd like to know what's wrong with the head angle?

Default I Can'T See The Halo?

New computer only eyeglass perscription and everything.

On my LDC I see no halo.

On my wifes CRT I see what looks like a dark shadow edge which honestly, I thought was due to the direct front lit contrast edge of a white subject against a dark sky.

Are you folks seeing it on LCD's?

Head turn-schmead turn, this is a spectacular image. I am puzzled by the black halo... Incredible wing position, killer light, and BKGR to die for.

Superb shot. A fine species. I can see a black halo but am watching it from my laptop ( 1680x1050 resolution). Last week got my eyes tested. If you suggest that problem is at my end, then I would prefer it to be the laptop and not my eyes. :-)

Congratulations again on a fine image.

Light, action, pose, colors and exposure are superb IMO but I think that something doesn´t work with the processing job you did. I see the extrange black halo about the bird and I miss details in the feathers of the bird maybe due to an agressive round of noise reduction (?)

Great shot. Takes on a nice early (or late) warm tint.

    Default Interesting Comments and Differences

I just looked at my post on a new dell M90 laptop I got at work and it basically looks like GARBAGE,

I looked at it on the monitor the drafting guys use (Apple Cinema 30") which I calibrated for them and it looks spectacular.

What Im seeing on this Dell laptop is an image which looks smeared to the ends of the earth with NR (I used only a tiny amount in the sky in actuality) and a crazy halo all over the place around the subject.

    Interesting and quite confusing.

The good news is, I printed three of these up at 15" x 11" for a show this weekend and they look spectacular :)

I guess I won't loose too much sleep over it.

    Default Further Update

I figured it out...it's all in the display resolution.

I switched the resolution on the laptop to what I process at home on my HP 24" LCD and the image looks great again.

Still strange but now it appears to help me undertand why some thought is looked so sub-par.

Jim, the head angle works fine for me and the flight pose is great. Beautiful light on the bird. The dark line around the bird happens when you select the background to improve the color. If the selection isn't perfect, you will see a lighter or darker line such as the one in this image. To avoid the line, you can use Select/refine edge. If you are only lightening or darkening the background, most of the time you can simply select the clean sky or water background and then expand the selection by two or three pixels.
