I was asked to cover a Canine Freestyle event this weekend. The relationships that these people have with their dogs simply blows my mind.
Anyone who knows me and my furry family knows that is saying a LOT!

The actual competition was a tough shoot with sodium vapor lighting, that was really dark and no flash allowed. There were four main lamps covering the ring and each of them had a drastically different color temperature overall, not to mention the way those dang things flicker. Custom WB didn't help and Auto WB was a disaster. Looking at my take from the day in lightroom grid mode reminds me of a skittles commercial, you know . . . "Taste the rainbow!"

I did some set up shots after the competition with flash and did some blue-screen formals as well. I did this one to try to keep the creative juices flowing.

    Thanks Gus.

I had some control over the light after the event. This is what my event thumbnails looked like before I corrected them though:

    Thank you so much everyone.

I'm really yearning to get out with some wild critters again too. I think I have forgotten how to track a bird.

Hey Jim, Love the post. My not too bright question: is there an easy way to describe how you did the strobe thing???

    Hi Artie & thanks.

It actually isn't a strobe or multiple exposure. It is a composite of three different images all done on a blue screen.

The highest part of the jump with the handler in it was the base & I added two more. It was my first time using content aware scaling in CS4 to get the canvass wide enough. I think it worked pretty well.

The source images for the composite are also up as proofs from the event here: http://www.jimpoor.com/cpg/thumbnails.php?album=117

    Hey Jim,

This is definitely the kind of thing that will set you apart! How many dog owners would just LOVE to have a portrait like this...???

    Great shot(s)!
