The big outside is not a studio - so this is a lousy photograph, out of focus, branches all over the place, missed the wing-tips - but when this bird started to perch 17m away from me, I wasn't about to check my settings! I got a few more shots once I'd calmed down - but I just wanted to post this to show the SIZE and the POWER of this magnificent bird - pure nature won over composition!

    Lower Zambezi, Zambia

Camera Model: Canon EOS-1D Mark III
    Date/Time: 2008:06:04 082:49
    Shutter speed: 1/800 sec
    Aperture: 6.3
    Exposure mode: Av
    Flash: Off
    Metering mode: Evaluative
    Drive mode: Continuous
    ISO: 400
    Lens: EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM
    Focal length: 400mm
    Subject distance: 17 m
    AF mode: AI Servo AF

By the way, should I superimpose copyright notices over anything I post? I always feel it is rather presumptuous to imagine that anyone would want to use an image of mine, but I see stickers on everyone else's posts - so I guess I'd better follow suit.

My apologies - I know this image is very poor quality, so please don't criticise it - I just liked the awesome might of this bird, and wanted to share it - the size of the wings - the talons.

Pretty exciting to get a raptor. So close, thanks for sharing, I would be excited too! ( and would probably mess up the shot)..... You did well.

You got your wish Robert and must have been exciting The thing I like the most in the image is your enthusiasm !!!!

I would copyright all images and register at the Library of Congress. Simple procedure, just a CD with as many images as you can cram !!!

    Hi Robert:

Magnificent bird . . . My first sight was when my wife went to Kenya in 2004, and all her Fish Eagles were on the top of trees..

Thanks for sharing your great photo.

    Uncle Gus
BTW: Africa photos are very popular on Webshots, and she is still getting 240 + hits every week on her Africa folder.

    Hi Gus,

Twice you've mentioned the hits your wife gets on her African folder. Can you tell me more about how she went about putting a folder on the web, and how she attracts so many hits each week? I'd like the address so that I can see her folder, too. I've got some nice images from Africa, and hope to have more next year, and I'd like to be able to share them, too. Otherwise they just sit on my hard drive gathering dust!

I'm not asking for any trade secrets (!), just a few tips.

Thanks, Alfred - it certainly was exciting!

Now, the Library of Congress. I guess this is something available for citizens of the US - but I live in Brazil (and I'm not a US Citizen). Is it a waste of time to put your name on an image, if it's not previously registered at the Congress Library? Without wanting to take up your time, can you possibly explain in slightly more detail, please?

Robert placing the copyright is just a deterrent and would on all images. From time to time we all get images downloaded to other places. One that comes to mind was a couple of years ago with images form the NAMPA Showcase. Someone downloaded a bunch from the top one hundred winners and made a website taking credit even explaining how he got them. I had some in there. After a couple of emails it came down fast.

Would not worry much about the theft since they don't usually do much with them, at the size we post they can only be used in the internet.

Regarding hits is a mater of making good images. Making a record image will not get you many hits. I understand they are exciting and memorable but for you !!! My suggestion is posting and having the image critiqued and also doing the same yourself to others.

Other suggestion for views is having your own website and will get hits from all over the world. For a while I was getting the most hits from China and India which imagine come from published images and magazine articles.

Talking about being at the right place, and at the right time. This is a powerful and majestic bird. I have never seen one up close like this. Congratulations on the capture. Not getting into the do's and don'ts, I'm sure your next capture is going to be fantastic; all it takes is determination and patience on your part...
Very good advise given by Mr. Forns...:) Looking forward in seeing more of your captures soon...
