You've got yourself a Black-crowned Night-heron here (looks like a young one). Although you can often find them standing near or on shore they are not a true "shorebird" in the birding sense of the word :-)

Thankyou I had guessed at that then someone else told me I was wrong... it has a nice red eye I had gone looking for the adult and several weeks later found this one at the same place
