Caught this spoonie taking a bath in some harsh, afternoon sidelight. Decided to ignore the rules and go for it. I tried to wait on him to turn his head so it would be lit and have a catchlight. This is part of a sequence of several images of him drying off. First, the small size presented here looks a LOT worse than the full size original. There are a ton of water droplets suspended in the air that look pretty cool on the full size. I think the wing position is great on this. My biggest nit is the position of his bill relative to the edge of the wing. I wish the bill were back a bit more, creating a seperation between the edge of the bill and wing. Other than that, the sidelight really doesn't bother me here. The effect is actually kinda unique IMO.

I like the light Bob. Rules are made to be broken right? The bird highlighted with the dark background makes for a dramatic shot in my opinion. If anything, I might try to crop out a bit of the foreground at the bottom of the photo. I need to find a good spot for these birds on my next trip to Florida...
that's some very nice "harsh" light!! if that's harsh you did well!! i think it's awesome and agree with your critique. would love to see the bigger image!!!
