Been busy... Am in San Diego. Will be doing two programs at Photo Expo West today (SAT 7 NOV) in Del Mar.
Knowing, seeing, and understanding the light is a necessity for those who wish to create dramatic images... The front-lit image (top) was created with the Canon 500mm f/4L IS lens and the EOS-50D. ISO 500. Evaluative metering +1/3 stop: 1/1000 sec. at f/4.5 in Av mode. The sand is reflecting the color of the cliffs. The image was created just 20 minutes before sunset on a clear afternoon.
The silhouette was created with the same equipment less than 20 minutes later... ISO 400. Evaluative metering +2/3 stop in Av mode: 1/500 sec. at f/5.6. I was fortunate in that there were lots of tame Marbled Godwits around.
On the occasion of my 5000th post (and for educational and comparitive purposes) I am posting two images in the same pane. Please forgive.

Man, the first one is just awesome (I do like the second onr too ...). What I love about the first is the cool blues creeping in (or is it out?) the frame of an otherwise warm toned image...fantastic contrast of cold/hot colours. I'm surprised Axel didn't mention the halo surrounding the silhouetted godwit!
