The most important part of this photo is the looks. Along with the tongue, the mood is set. So it makes sense to intensify this mood by creating as much closeup as is possible. So I agree with Alfred's suggestions. I downloaded the shot to check the crop. It looks fine without the out of focus grasses in the front.
Inclusion of environment looks nice, when you can clearly establish a relation or dependence of a subject on the environment. Else, we get comments like BG is cluttered or something like that.
Look forward to more wolf shots.
