Default Backpack for NIkon 600mm f/4 VR lens

I just received my new Nikon 600mm f/4 VR lens. I have a planned trip to Bosque del Apache NWR on December and I am looking for a bag to hold it as carry-on in air travel. I was considering Lowepro Lens Trekker 600 AW II (new), but it is 3" higher than old version and does not meet the requirement of carry-on luggage posted on airline's website. I could not find old version of Lens Trekker 600 SW anywhere. Are there any other alternatives?

Thank you so much for help!

Why not use a rolling backpack and place all of your gear? I use the Lowepro Road Runner but can also use one of the Think Tank cases.

Might want to search in Arites bulletins, he has info on the RR and shows images on how he packs. ..... btw Big Warm Welcome :) and big congrats on your lens !!!!

I use the equivalent for the Canon 500. I travel extensively and never have issues carrying it on board. http://kgear.com/l/l521.html?PHPSESS...88017c55fe19f7

I was in a cab accident in Ottawa back in March when all my equipment in the trunk was destroyed with the exception of what was packed in this bag.

I travel using the Think Tank Photo Airport Security 2.0. I previously used the Lowepro Roadrunner AW, but I like the Think Tank much better. It is very well built. It easily holds my 600 f/4 with the hood reversed, along with my 70-200 f/4, 1D Mark III, 50D, flash, memory card holders, extension tubes, 1.4x, 2.x, Epson card reader, binoculars, etc. Highly recommended.

Thank you all for your recommendations, I will think more about these choices. For local or short trip, do you use different kind of bags for this big lens? Any recommendation?

    Thanks!

For local outings I use the same Roadrunner case for transporting from home to car. At location will only take what I need.

btw The Roadrunner has straps for carrying as a backpack but are removable. I've had mine for a few years and working perfectly. If I need to replace would probably go to the Thinktank.

Another vote for Think Tank, it is lighter than most and it also does not look like a camera bag, hopefully giving greater security.
