I cropped the image to take the bird out of the center. I think this strenghtens the composition and emphasizes the mood of the picture given by the dramatic light.
Very nice portrait, Mike. I think taking a little off the left is fine. Lovely BG and details on the face and beak. Would only wish for more in the blacks - there is a big area of blocked up black in the centre of the image. Shadow/highlight opens up a bit.
Love the sharpness, light, pose and BG but the bird is too centered in the frame. I like a lot Joel´s repost. Too bad that you clipped the blacks (have a look at the histogram) because I am sure that the dark areas of the necke are full of interesting textures and details.
Thanks to all for the comments. Especially the suggestion to move the subject to the left. As for the blacks on the neck, that's a bit of a puzzle. The original image was neither over- or under-exposed. Looking at both the raw and the converted image, the only way I can find any detail on the neck is via extreme shadow adjustment (100% + a second adjustment). Might the problem be the light conditions when the photo was taken?
