This is a male Dotterel in breeding plumage. Will upload a female tomorrow.

These are classed as an endangered species and its rare to find one that has not been banded.

Beautiful soft light and such lovely plumage detail. I like the green in the background, but I might clean up the dark spots on the beach area a bit, especially the small black spot at the bottom edge. Wonderful capture.

Nice to see an NZ bird posted, Jason. Lovely textures and colours in the breeding plumage. I agree with Linda's suggestions but would probably crop in closer to remove the dark spot on the beach and then lighten the OOF BG dark areas. A slight head turn toward the camera would add to the image and maybe a slight reduction in flash intensity. They must have been doing a lot of banding in your area as none of the ones I have shot at Miranda or Ohope have been banded.

Lovely image. I can't wait to see more NZ shorebird images. Hopefully they will be shared on my coming shorebird project site.

Really Nice I am hoping to see one of these when I come out to NZ for the month of February.
