One of the biggest problems i am having with digital is noise. At ISO 400 my Canon 10D exhibits a lot of noise. Other than getting a new camera (currently out of my range). What are some reasonanbly inexpensive solutions?

    Canon 10D
    Canon 100-400 IS @ 400
    1/1,000 sec @ F5.6
    Aperature Priority
    Bogen 3055 ballhead
    Dawns early light

    Blessings to all.

I guess getting some sort of Noise Removal program Chris. I hear Noise Ninja mentioned on the site but I have never used it. I think you can demo it. Also a noise removal feature in ACR. Or what about fill flash and a lower ISO? Background Blur Tool too.

Chris, Noise Ninja and Neat Image are two of the best noise removal programs. You can download the free trials for either but I would recommend getting the actual program as it works much better and has more options. (Neat image has a plug-in for Photoshop...I'm sure Noise Ninja does as well.)

Another option is to select your main subject, do an inverse selection and then do a filter/blur/surface blur. It's pretty good at getting out a lot of noise.

As for your image, I think you could use a little lighting in his face - it's really hard to make out his eyes on my monitor. Also, next time, watch that you don't get the head to intersect right at the horizon line. Try to get him entirely beneath it so it's less distracting. I love your lighting and the reflection below is very nice!

Hi Chris Not sure what compensation you used if any, not listed. Early morning with Canon you need to open form meter reading, normally one stop or more.
The image looks sort of dark as presented and opening the shadows would introduce more noise !!! Check the histogram and see what was going on.

Noise Ninja does have a PS plug in and can recommend. Anything this plug in does and others you can do on your own with PS but it is so convenient I would purchase. You need the program and the noise profiles for different cameras. They are actually specific to each ISO setting. You load the ISO profiles like you do actions. Simple and its well explained in the program. Any problems let us know !!!
