Ok the picture was taken around 10.00 am, so it would have probably been around 25 centigrade, not hot by Etosha standards It got up to 38 around 14.00.
Harshness goes hand in hand with photography in Etosha, mainly because of the high amount of white rock but also because of dust haze. Etosha is also different in that most animals come to waterholes in the heat of the day I can only presume this is because they figure the Lions are asleep. The intention was to show the difference in size, this is a bit overstated because the Gemsbok is further away.
I tried two things on a download. I used a reverse s-curve and then a local contrast enhancement to help on the light (http://www.birdphotographers.net/for...ad.php?t=20434). I like the comp - the side angles of the animals really contrasts them well.
