Taken on the weekend. I was pleased when the exposure turned out as well as it did. I was almost ready to sell all my gear I was getting so frustrated with exposure.

Lightened the head area, sharpened the eye, and toned down the tail although it was in check.
    C & C appreciated.
My high speed is back up :) (fingers crossed)

Wow, your image is nice. I just tried the same type photo, and mine was waaaaaaaay too dark. Really like that personal eye contact! And the softness plus the details in the feathers. I just like everything, the ripples, the color in the head. etc. lol

On my monitor though I can't see any detail in the tail whites and blacks.

Hi Cheryl, went back into the original ACR file and there was not to much detail in the blacks in the tail area, just a gradation of tones, (very little) although it wasn't underexposed and I was getting 30's with the colour picker. Just a bit of detail where the feathers curl. The whites, the highest reading I got was about 247 and I toned them down with a linear burn and again not a lot of detail. I think it all get compressed even more with compression to a jpeg. Maybe someone else can explain it.

BTW thanks for your tip about shooting the swan with the backlighting of the sun. I will try that sometime.

jackie, you are crazy!! sell your equipment?!!! get that out of your head!!

love your duck. looks fantastic! nice detail and great exposure! one thing looked a little suspect was the angle of the duck. i used the straighten tool and drew a line from the tip of the bill to the same point on the reflection. resulted in a -3.54 degree change and did look better. give it a shot and see what you think.

    Lady Jackie,
It looks superb, good head angle with sharp eye; sharp details and very good color rendition. The duck is placed just right in frame. You have a good composition, image and capture...very well done...proud of you...

Excellent capture Jackie. IMO I think is one of your finest bird captures. Head angle, eye contact, background and exposure, they're all there.
    Big Congrats

I think all the technicals on this image are terrific. Agree with comments of others. I understand and share your frustration with digital exposure. There is lots to learn and re-learn. I also agree with Alfred that a few days of good sunlight can do a lot to improve exposure and help one regain some confidence.
    Cheers
