Default Northern Hawk Owl with Prey

    Stoney Creek Mountain, Ontario, Canada

    Nikon D300 ,Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G ED-IF AF-S VR
    1/400s f/4.0 at 400.0mm iso400
Hand held, no flash, Vertical crop., basic PS.

I was very cool to watch this bird hunt, and snag this vole trough about a foot of snow., then on its first perch it will break the neck of the victim. Unfortunately, the perch is a steel fence post. Better luck next time!

take care, and thanks for looking.

As a biology teacher.....I like this one. You captured a very graphic moment. The exposure and techs are great. What's really interesting is the pose of the vole....and that you've got eye contact of both the Owl and the Vole. I know you'd have liked a natural perch but to be honest.....with such an action packed image...I don't even notice. Well done.

    Hi Raymond,

This is way cool! The behavior you've captured is really extraordinary. Being able to see the faces of both really adds to the impact. Very nice bg too. The post may not be the most ideal perch, but it doesn't detract from the image, IMO. It actualy sort of blends in nicely.
