You are right that it's a juvenile Northern Cardinal transitioning into an adult because the bill is intermediate between black (juvenile) and orange (adult). My suspicion is that this is a female, but I'm not sure that we can tell with 100% confidence at this stage...certainly none of the red is dominant enough that it has to be a male.
She looks female to me.... beak color... even young male cardinals are red..She looks like she is ill lacking color or that cardinal similar kind from the south that starts with a p....
