Buck's in Northern Michigan are pre rut and will come to a call and decoy. This is my favorite technique for calling in big bucks.

This boy wanted to kick the crap out of the decoy, but the camera shutter going off finally got to his brain and bolted.

    Curly,
Interesting to hear that you use a decoy. I have never seen one used for Blacktails though i know it is common for Whitetail and Pronghorns. As for calling do you use a grunt call or do you rattle antlers?
As far as your composition I would rather see less deer as in a portrait or see the whole deer including the feet. I like the expression you caught on the deers face. Good job on keeping low so as to make the deer appear larger and more dramatic. It's also nice to see the action coming into the frame.

Keep em coming and God bless,

    Chris

Very nice deer image! I like how it looks like he's arguing with you (which, in essence, he really is). I agree with Chris' comments and would add that the background could use a little noise reduction. The lighter colors are beautiful but the green is just a bit oversaturated for my taste.

Thanks for your help, Chris I use a electronic call with a sequence of buck scraping antlers on brush, then two minutes of silence, then series of grunts then two minutes of silence, then I do bucks sparing which is a 3 minute sequence. Then silence and if nothing shows up in 10 minutes I will go to bucks fighting which is very loud then wait. If they are in the area and defending the turf they will come in and having a decoy makes them bolder. I place the call by the buck decoy.

    Here is the image cropped.

I like the re-post as well. Its deer season, time to get those trophy photos!

    Dennis,

I prefer the recrop due to the legs being cut in the first version. Eyes and face appear soft to me. Try some selective sharpening.

    Dennis,
The repost is better. I would still crop a bit more to remove the hint of legs from the image. I agree with Robert's suggestion regarding sharpening.

    Cheers,
