    Default White-crowned Sparrow

    EOS-1D Mk III, 500mm f/4 + 2xII, 1/1250, f/8, ISO 800
    Manual Fill Flash at -2
    About 90% of Full Frame

Photographed earlier this month on Monhegan Island in ME.

This is from the same set up depicted in Artie's most recent bulletin.
We had several species of sparrows but I think these guys gave us the best poses.

Looking forward to your comments and critiques !

Well done bud. You might want to selectively lighten the darkest areas of the BKGR and then do a small Gaussian blur on the BKGR to soften it up a bit. Thanks again for your and Ann's help.

Nice Mike. Great portrait of a great bird. Like the little splash of red in the BG. Love the eye detail and colour. The bird seems a little over-flashed but you were obviously using high-speed synch which reduces the output of the flash and you cut the output back by 2 stops as well. From the comment about cropping you were obviously close to the subject which would dump a lot of light on the subject. Did you have a beamer attached to the flash?

Thanks for the feedback, John !
No beamer on this one. Don't usually use it when working this close to subject.
Agree flash is borderline here. It's possible that I misjudged the distance
to the subject when setting the manual flash distance scale and it may have resulted
in more than -2. Shouldn't have been too far off though.
