    Default Female Red Crossbill

Photograph created last winter at Algonquin Park. I saw that some Crossbills were favoring this perch before going to the ground to pick up some dirt/small pebbles. I saw that the young evergreen was only about 6 ft tall = same as me = eye level images! I therefore positioned myself nearby and waited for them to perch. They gave me time to take both portraits and landscapes, left and right. The BG is a leafless forest. I kinda like this composition with the bird way up high in the corner and the long vertical perch running down the left, but there is room to crop additionally as this is a 85% full-frame image. At that point this was a lifer for me, and I thought this series of photographs was a great way to open up a folder on this species :)

Great bird, comp and perch. The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Sweet shot. Great "look" on his face.

The bokeh looks like a studio cloth backdrop! Very cool.

And I dig the portrait crop.

Great composition and find. It looks a bit soft on my monitor, is this a heavy crop? Maybe it just needs a bit more sharpening.
