Default Canon 50D - Picture Style

Hi there. I just picked up my 50D yesterday and have been playing around with settings. I have a question about Picture Style. I shoot in RAW. Would I be better in Standard or Neutral? Obviously I can try both when I get out this weekend. But I am wondering whether Neutral is the better choice given RAW with PP in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Picture styles don't apply to RAW files. I have my 40D as Standard.

    Hi Ed,

Pic styles dont effect Raw files directly but they do control the review thumb and the embedded JPEG. So the preview image and histogram on the LCD will reflect the pic style. The color space has the same effect. I use standard on all of my cameras and sRGB for a more contrasty preview image and histogram. I use the expose to the right technique.

The answer depends on your camera technique, do you 'expose to the right' or do you 'expose for the left'. If you are trying to get the maximum amount of dynamic range, use neutral or even a custom pic style and Adobe RGB. If you are worried about blowing highlights use a higher contrast setting, standard, or vivid or custom and sRGB.

    Make sense?

    Sorry i missed this question.

This will not have any effect.

LR and PS-ACR override pic styles by default. I dont recommend using the defaults.

BB and DPP and some other programs use the embedded preview Jpegs (This is why the previews load so much faster than LR and ACR).
