Panasonic DMC-FZ18, handheld (IS), focal length 7mm (42 mm DSLR equivalent), 3+ closeup filter, ISO-400, F/3.2, 1/40 sec, pattern metering, RAW, EC -0.7

Still practicing on those mushrooms (it's the season here) and still struggling compositionwise. I'm not very satisfied with the OOF mushrooms in the FG. It's the result of using a closup filter on a shadowy forest floor, having no tripod and working with a camera that produces horrible amounts of noise at high ISO. That said, I'm not sure if I would have liked the composition if they would have been in focus. I also tried shooting them straight up front, but this actually produced a very boring image. Critique and suggestions very welcome!

Jerry, I too keep thinking that I would like to see the front mushrooms in focus. That being said, I really like the angle you used here! Especially how you can see beneath the caps of those in the back.

    Hi Jerry,
I like your basic composition. You need to stop down on your f-stop. you are shooting with a big aperture, that is why your depth of field is very narrow, and the front mushrooms are out of focus. I clean up the image a bit, removed the dirt, cloned in texture on the white hot spots on the caps and cropped into a pano to follow the linear flow of your subject. see if this presents better for you...

Hi y'all, thanks a lot for you comments. Gus, I like how your repost shows the flaws in the original. I especially like how you got rid of the shiny spots on the hoods! I guess a good fill flash would have done wonders here (adding details), although in my experience it can produce a lot of extra sharp shadows. I also think that I should have got an even sharper angle on this, adding more depth. Next time, I'll bring a tripod to be able to really close down the aperture and gain more DOF!
