The is my second submission from Fort Island Trail Crystal River. This is a picture that I really like. It could be sharper but I really like how the gull is looking right into the lens and I am working to fill the frame as much as I can. I should have added that outside of resizing the picture is right out of the camera untouched. All C&C is appreciated. Thanks

    Hi John,
I like your basic composition...I like the placement of the bird in frame, also like the wing position and capture angle. There are several points that we need to address; in order to make your next creation much stronger...:)...Looking at the image, I see what appears to be a dirty sensor, or a very dirty lens...there are far too many dirt spots in the sky; your subject need more room to the left of the frame...the tip of the wing is clipped off; the under wings are too dark- under exposed and lack definition or details. The bird is not in focus, its a bit blurred...I did a few modification to your basic image, in order to illustrate these points...I added canvas to the left side of the frame, and reconstructed the wing tip; I cleaned up most of the dirt spots by cloning in texture from the clean areas of the sky. I lightened the under wings, and selective sharpened the contour of the wings and the face and eyes. I increased the saturation and contrast...see if this presents better for you...

Hi John Not sure what you were trying to do exposure wise but the image seems under exposed. Do check the histogram and make sure there is data in the fifth box to the right.

Would also suggest to change the settings. There is no need to stop down to f 22 since you are sacrificing shutter speed and ISO big time. I would expose at ISO400 and aperture wise stop down one if the shutter speed is high enough. I like to keep it at over 1000. btw I find that I'm shooting wide open almost all the time. Only for close ups with needed dof will I stop down.

Thanks Gus, Your adjustments made a world of difference. I took notes on what you said and will work on them. Thanks to you also Alfred, I jotted down the your suggestions and will try the ISO 400 and Shutter Speed over 1000. I am attempting to master this Manual mode from Auto and doing as much as possible in the camera. Those are my goals and I do appreciate anything that will help meet those. When we go out shooting this weekend I will keep in mind all the recommendations. Thanks also to Nonda for your comments.

    John
