Just picked up my 50D today! Initial impression; this is one incredible camera! AF runs circles around the 40D, and IMO it's significantly better than the Mark III. It locks on impressively quickly. Low light + low contrast doesn't seem to faze the AF system. I was using the 400 f/5.6 lens today. Metering is excellent. LCD screen is a thing of beauty. Fine detail at ISO 3200 is quite well preserved. This photo was shot JPEG (I shot RAW + JPEG but haven't loaded the new Canon software yet; RAW processing of this image will happen later).
Canon 50D, 400mm, f/7.1, 1/4000, ISO 800, no flash, hand held
Wow. Great to hear such reviews. I've been waiting to see some results but this sounds great. Looks like the AF may be able to track a bit better in flight than the 40D eh??
*tears* I knew that someone was going to be posting pictures made with this camera soon. So sad I have not gotten mine yet. Surgery is taking presidence over any kind of new toy. *tears*
Awesome picture btw. And for JPG. WOW. Great catch on both counts.
First of all Doug, let me thank you for sharing your experience with this new camera, it sounds like this is a great choice for folks like me that want to upgrade. Now can you explain what does ''AF runs circles around the 40D'' means?
Besides, I will tell you that I really like this image, I am not a big fan of ducks but this one is really nice, very rich colors and wing position.
Congratulations Doug! Shot is very nice. Can you explain more about the AF. Which AF points were used? I hope the camera would be available in sufficient numbers soon, so that I can pick up.
Where the 40D tends to search for focus, particularly in low light and low contrast, the 50D locks on immediately. Also, I had a great deal of success acquiring focus on fast-moving ducks in flight within a very short amount of time.
