and a $150 lens! i actually thought it turned out pretty good. this was under the canopy of a tree and very dark!!! i didnt have a tripod so i said what the heck and tried the high ISO. the bird is a tawny frogmouth at the miami zoo's aviary. did some research and found that these guys are from australia. maybe lance could help us out with some more info. some places said it was an owl and some said it wasnt.

D300, 70-300 at 112mm, f/5, 1/100s, -1.0EV, ISO 2000, handheld. needed to be at 0EV. (pushed 1 EV in PP), flash fill at -0.3EV. should i have had the diffuser down here?

thanks for looking and comments and critiques appreciated.

Now now Harold - this is what I call showing off ....:D:eek::D... ISO 2000!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does this affect how much fill flash you use? It looks amazing and I can't see any noise, although I'm on my laptop at the moment. Great bird BTW!

    Hi Harold,

I am impressed with the quality given the image was captured at ASO of 2000. The bird looks great (detail and sharp). Very nice. You might want to give the eyes a bit of work; on my monitor there appears to be slight purple cast (steel-eye) from the flash. I was also wondering if desaturating the greens would enhance the image.

    Regards,

    Phil

thanks, phil. i might try that desaturation idea. it may put more emphasis on the bird. i think i can fix that eye too. thanks again.

Hi MR H - ahh the frogmouth - 2000 ISO well done, I shot some concerts the other night at 6400 on the D3 amazing stuff.

He is not a OWL - more closely related to the NIGHTJAR family. (Lacks the curved Talons of the OWL family) Found pretty much throughout Australia - Nocturnal feeding on insects, worms, snails, small mammals - often hit by cars as they chase the insects in the beams of the cars headlights :)

Very, very impresive for ISO 2000, especially as you pushed it a stop in processing. Doesn't that make it effectively ISO 4000? I'd desaturate the greens a touch but other than that, fabulous.

    Cheers.

    Doctor Davis,
Its not the camera and lens; its the photographer behind it...:D You did well Daktari, I like it there is not wrong with the Nikkor 70-300mm lens that you have; you are just in tune with your equipment...congrats...

Ooooh Harold I love it. Great thinking with the ISO 2000. My hand sometimes can be shaky and I up the ISO every now and then, Agree with BG, but congrats are in order. Look forward to shooting with you and Jill again.
