Default Gold Finch Turning To Winter Plumage

I made this image last year when the finches were just beginning to change plumage. I like the way the finch is looking back.

1D Mark II with 500 f4 and 2 X TC fill flash with BB. Unfortunately, I see some compression artifacts in the uploaded file.

What do you suggest to make it better?

Hi Ed. I like the finch's pose as well, and it looks like you have a fair amount of detail in the eye which is good to see. Background is great and does not interfere with the bird. I think that a small crop from the bottom wouldn't go astray. May improve composition. I am not sure how to make the image upload better. Maybe you could try sharpening it.

I would be tempted to crop in tighter on the bird. I find the texture in the background a bit distracting and tightening the crop significantly reduces this. I like the pose with the head turned toward you.
