This little chap is one of a large group who visit us every year and keep us wearing earmuffs as they screech around the garden eating seeds and fruit (some of it fermented then we have Drunk noisy birds)
Captured with a Canon 30D 300mm F4 IS with 1.4X converter at 420mm, 1/25 sec at F9, ISO 200 hand held with IS on.
Your solution to better image is in your settings. 420mm, 1/25 sec at F9, ISO 200.
its better to have 1/focal length to make good image. You shot at 420mm and your shutter speed is 1/25. What worked for you is IS. Your should have increased your ISO to make a decent shutter speed.
Then comes aperture. You shot at F9. This increased DOF and included distracting elements in background. IF you use F4 that would minimize distracting elements.
Image like this I would go for a vertical composition to give more attention to subject. May be a little more saturation boost too?
