I find this photo to have a very serene quality to it. It was taken in Southern California in August. I'm going back in a week to do more photography, only this time I'll be bringing my new 50D for some serious field testing!
Canon 1D Mark III, 840mm, f/5.6, 1/500, ISO 800, no flash, low tripod
Nice job of controlling where the horizon intersects the bird and I love the way you handled the legs, giving us enough reflection to not appear clipped.
I actually shot a few frames at ISO 1600 and 3200 yesterday at Kurt's. I have one on order (it's already been shipped) from Hunt's. I shot JPEG yesterday with default camera settings, and the results were really impressive! I wouldn't hesitate to use ISO 1600 (I guess you could call it the new ISO 800), and even ISO 3200 looked very good.
Wonderful image Doug. Love the pose in this one and the wonderful low angle. The BG sets this off beautifully with the dark hitting the lighter adding another demension of interest. Very well composed !!!!!!
Doug, this is really nice. Love the pose, the light, and the slight separation between beak and body. I think lots of us will be looking forward to seeing some images from your new 50D. Good luck!
Hi Doug - awesome as usual - just wondering as to why you choose not to include the entire reflection?? Was the reflection not that strong? or did you do it purely from a compositional viewpoint.
It looks as tough it may need an ever so slight CCW rotation, but it could just be an illusion created by the angled legs. I like the pose and low angle. I also can't wait to see 50D images :-)
Nice pose and although I am not fond of sidelighting, you did a good job controlling the bright and shadowed areas in this image. Looking forward to getting feedback on the 50D.
It was done from a compositional point of view. I only had a little bit of the body's reflection, and I liked it better with just the legs included. This is a near top-to-bottom crop from a horizontal shot.
