Time to stop lurking, and instead contribute to the forum. It's not that often that I do make bird images that I feel have the quality that I want, but it does happen occasionally. This was one such occasion. I was taking a walk in the Söderåsen National Park (south of Sweden, near my home) in late April this year, with my then 10 month old son in a child carrier on my back. This robin and a chaffinch comes chasing each other (can't say who was chasing who) back and forth between the bushes in front of us. The chase was short but obviously tiering. The chaffinch disappeared, but the robin perched on this tree stump and allowed us to approach, even though my son was not quite in silent mode.
Technical details: Canon EOS 40D, EF 300/4 L IS USM, 1/200 sec, f/4, ISO 200, handheld
The image is cropped from the bottom, and I have darkened the wood somewhat in Photoshop.
Welcome to BPN Fredrik! This is a terrific first image to post here. The pose provides nice eye contact. The perch has a lot of character. The light is good. And the BG is nice and soft. Some BPN members may suggest fill flash here, but I like it as presented. As a general rule, I don't typically use ISO 200 when hand holding; I'll bump to ISO 400 or more in order to maximize shutter speed. Look forward to many more of your photos!
All of the elements of the image are what is requisite for a good image. I , (IMHO) would have use a bit of fill-in flash. But, that being said, the image is quality. Well done.
Hey there Frederik, very nice image to start off with! You deserve some extra credit considering you shot this with your kid on your back! Our little ones have a habit with interfering with their parents' hobbies a lot. My four year old son likes to shake the spiderwebs when I'm out in our back yard for some macro shooting...
Hope to see more of your work!
Glad you have decided to post, and this is a lovely image to start with! Nice pose, great head angle and the bg clean brown bg is lovely. Pretty soft light and sharp detail. Well captured! Looking forward to more of your bird images!
