One of the last shots on the last day of the ICF competition I was out driving the ranch looking for anything to wrap up the competition on a high note and came across a pair of GHO's hunting over a field in the late afternoon. Ended up shooting them until dark, and came away with this shot and some of my favorite moments of the month. This and one other of my owl shots ended up making it into the overall top 100 for the contest.
1d MkIII, 500 w/1.4x, 1/1250" @ f8, ISO1250
This is the version I sent in for my portfolio, no cropping, cloning, or other maniputaltions as per the contest rulles, just a touch of USM and color correction. Really close to sunset, so I bumped the ISO to keep up the the shutter speed. When he started getting ready to jump off his branch, I pre focused on the spot I thought he would jump into.
It would have been worth the time spent just to see them, let alone acquire an image like this one. Love the faint yellow glow and the direct eye contact here. Nice down beat on the wings too.
Awesome Jason, one of the better owl photos I have seen. Were hoping to have a owl invasion this winter in Northern Michigan as the vole and mice crashed in James Bay. Great capture of the eyes as it really makes the photo
