    Craig,

    Like the composition and subject placement. I see considerable noise and looks like ISO 1600 is the issue. I would shoot little wide open to keep my ISO low for better quality image.

    Yes, 1d3 can be quite noisy at ISO 1600, you need to do further noise reduction on the BG.
    Also the whites are hot where the sun is hitting them.
    Since the surroundings are so dark, you needed to underexpose to protect the whites. If you use evaluative metering, the camera would open to make the dark neutral, therefore blowing the whites.

    Nice composition!
