A family of Western Spotted Skunks has taken up residence in my garage. It is a little unerving as you can imagine to go into the garage and see a skunk up in the rafters. How did they get in? They crawled in under the front garage door. There is about a four inch by two inch hole where the rubber seal doesn't quite make it all the way across the opening. How can they fit into a hole so small? Yesterday I took action. First I blocked off the hole and then I got out my live trap. I baited it with tuna juice from my lunch. Believe it or not I caught one within fifteen minutes of setting the trap. Now as some of you might have thought how do you get the skunk out of the garage? Very, very carefully. I took a rake and approached the trap from the trapdoor side. (This blocks any spray from getting you should it spray.) Then I slowly dragged the trap out of the garage onto the driveway with the rake. The next part is rather fun. My family will never help me with this. I just can't figure out why. I took a plastic tarp about eight feet by ten feet and walked slowly towards the trap with the tarp spread out in front of me like a shield. I draped the tarp over the trap and I rolled it up. I then put the bundle on top of my four wheel drive and drove down an old logging road near my house. Releasing the little bugger is a bit touch and go. I tipped the trap on its side and approached it from the door again. I quickly undid the locking latch and jumped away. The skunk poked its head out and then took off running. First away and the back towards me. AAAAhhhh. Luckily it stopped and ran the other way. I caught another one last night and let it go this morning.
Hi Chris an experience you will never forget !!!!!
They are so cute ..... do you miss them already :D:):):) btw I have seen them locally in pet shops with the glad removed, not sure if they make good pets.
Oh those pesky little guys. If it makes you feel any better, my co-worker went out to her garage last week and found an entire family of bats had taken up residence in her rafters.:eek::eek:
Loved the background history Chris. My Dad was a vet. and operated on these little creatures so they could be kept as pets and apparently they made wonderful pets. This image has brought back many memories. Thanks so much for sharing.
