Northern Michigan. Loon and chick swimming underwater. Photographed while standing in boat looking down at loons diving under the water. Polarizing lens used.

Hey Ivan. Great to see you here. Wow. This is simply amazing. Love the way the feet are spread and the juxtaposition of the chick and the adult. And the detail is amazing. How deep were they? Man, this is a wonderful image. I would add a bit of canvas to the bottom.
later and love,

This is very cool! I've never seen them this way and had no idea the position of the feet looks like this. To have parent and chick in the same frame puts it over the top for me. Thanks for sharing and I second Artie's suggestion to add some space at the bottom.
Very cool because it is different, and shows something most of us don't see. I think it could be even better if the green color of the water were a bit more neutral. Easy to do just to see.
Really different shot. I have never seen a loon shot like it and interesting to see their pose underwater. A touch more canvas at the bottom but that about it.
This is an original image. I've never seen this before and I'll never go on a boat again without a polarizer. To learn something about the subject and to learn something about photography from just the one image is wonderful. Thank you for posting this.
Incredible image Ivan. Really shows the behavior of these guys but also having the youngster along with the adult just makes it that much better. Extremely well done!
Hi Artie,
I knew you'd make the comment about adding canvas and the point is well taken.
I would estimate the the loons were 3-6 feet deep. We had been waiting to get photos like these, but the light never seemed right. Then on our 4th day of the trip, the loons entered shallow water with the light being perfect and they started to dive. I have several other pictures of various stages of diving and I'll post them over the next few days.

Nice presence of mind to have observed and captured this. I'm seeing this kinda image for the first time. Pretty good clarity considering the fact that they were swimming 3-6 feet deep.
