Everyone else was taking pictures of the purple gallinules and the gull flight shots. I just couldn't resist taking her picture as she watched the action.

    Canon 20D, 100-400mm at 400, f/8, 1/800, ISO 400, no flash, handheld

I have one thought on the picture, but I will see what everyone here thinks.

Thanks in advance. Have a wonderful day.

Excellent focus Patty and beautiful eye contact and lighting. Very pleasing BG and my only thoughts would be to off center this image by cripping some off the left and perhaps just a touch top and bottom so as to balance the image. Lovely work and thanks for sharing.

I like the photograph. The background is well handled. The only thing that comes to mind is that broken branch that can be a bit of a distraction. I hope you don't mind, but I tried to remove it the best that I can.

I like it. If I had to pick something to change it would be that the BG is too similar in color and even pattern to the bird. I might try to darken the BG just a bit and maybe even change the color just a tad. I think just a darkening would work though to help the subject stand out a little more.

Congrats on making an artistic image of a grackle (!!?)! These guys are too often overlooked. Taking out the fork in the branch improved this, and I agree that more contrast between the bg and the bird would give the image more "pow" and "wow."

I'm posting in support of leaving the branch in. It gives my eye a lead back around to the head of the bird after my gaze has dropped down the body. If the pale broken end distracts, darken that area selectively.
