Another gull pic(yes the birding is that slow here right now). This one with an unusual BG. What do you think of the orange and blue.Is the blue distracting. I kind of like it. The original was underexposed a bit.30D, 300 mm L,f 5.0, 1/2500 sec ISO 320Dave Brown

I like the background. I also like what the gull is standing on. With those colors, gives the
photo a little more punch vs just having the water as grey background.

I like the bg a lot Would just get rid of half the top strip. Can also work around the eye to make it more visible !!! Fine image Dave .... this looks very much like I took while walking around the harbor !!!!

A candidate for HOM? If so let us know so we can move it to the proper forum.

If you "kinda like it" that's alright, I guess...but you should strive for creating "I really love it!" type images :-) I like Al's suggestions.

    Hi,

I agree this isn't the right forum for this image. I actually posted it here incorrectly, I was going to post it in ETL. So you could move it there. I also agree with you about striving for images I love. Photo ops are hard to come by in St.John's these days, that's why I was trying to get creative and play with BG color. Thank for the comments.

There you go Dave, thread moved!!

I would say it is certainly creative and the play on colours is nice...therefore yes you've done well :-)

    Hi Dave,
I like your composition, I would suggest in cropping out the red band on top, my eye keeps going there, and lighten up the eye a wee bit. Other than that, you did well, a fine capture indeed...congrats...

i like the bg dave! i like the detail in the bird too. nice dof. i gave the suggestions a try and this is what i came up with. lightened the eye and cropped.

nice job!! the eye are was pretty easy to do, even with the small size so i'm sure you can work the RAW even better!!

    Hi,

Nice repost Harold. Several people commented on lightening the eye. I actually lightened it already. GBBG's have very dark eyes and only a small portion have a pale eye color- this is why Ileft the eye as dark as it was. I agree that the eye looks better in the repost, but this bird actually had a dark eye in life. Anyway, my intentions for this post were regarding the BG, got off topic a bit. I will post a version of this before I played with the BG. I somewhat created this BG by cloning, using a series of different opacaties to make it look smooth. I'm not home right now but will post a pic with unaltered BG to show you the difference. Thanks again to everyone for the comments. I feel I've improved 100% since started posting here!

    Hi All,

Here is the original. No alterations, aside from crop and resize.
