Must admit that this photo didn't take a lot of patience - just an observant partner. My partner was trimming the grapes back this morning when she saw this Praying Mantis snatch a bee out of the air and start eating it. Luckily (for me) she called for me to grab the camera.

Lisa, that image sure beats the ones i took today of a praying mantis! Your image certainly shows the habitat and camouflage of the mantis. I was going to say that I would crop some off the bottom to focus on the mantis more, but those antennas go nearly all the way to the bottom. no cropping there.

cool capture, lisa!! the mantis is very well camo'd!! i didnt see it at first! would try to darken the corners a bit to make your subject pop a little more. i think that may work. wondering also what this would look like rotated 180 degrees. really sharp. nice job!

Maybe a vertical crop and darkening of the corners. Cool capture!

I agree with others that the mantis is so well camo'd that it's kind to see without really looking. You've got good eyes, Lisa. But I'm not sure sure if darkening the corners is good enough to make the subject pop. Another thing you could try, if you want to, is to desaturate the colors of the background to make the mantis and its prey stand out from the rest of the photo.

I'm not sure I know how to desaturate so it would look good, Desmond.
Cheryl, I know what you mean, I took some of the antennae off with my original crop and had to re crop.
Harold and Jackie, thanks for the advice. I've cropped to a vertical, and tried to darken the corners a little now I thing the right top corner leaf looks strange. Haven't rotated this one, but will try that next.

That's ok. It just another way to make the center of interest stand out from the rest. I think your second crop works.

Thanks all for the C&C. I think the second vertical crop also works better.
