This is my friend "Smutty Nose" because of the goop at his nares. Canon 1vHS with EF 600 mm f/4 IS and 2x TC. He's from my pushed Provia days and a large tiff file. Smutty gave me twenty minutes and many good images, all with the dirty nose. American Bitterns "hide" by placing themselves in an erect position in order to disappear into the tall grasses. This also explains their coloration. One of my favorite takes. C & C welcomed.

That is one good looking Bittern, great habitat and behavior shown, exposure and sharpness right on!

I like the typical pose and habitat you captured here. A good scan!

Yes to the good scan and while I like the image one thing bugs me: the single oof blade of grass that intersects the head just behind the dirty part of the bill...

I'd have done more if I could have figured out how to work on the tif file at a size larger than 26% of the image. But who wouldn't knock himself out trying to please the master (who I know only has my best interest in mind). I used a fine cloning tool and I believe I cured the part of the grass that protrudes above the bill. I did a little trying to deal with the goop on the bill, but that was a scary project and, after all that goop is this guy's trade mark.
