I know this is a super common behavior for birds, but I thought i might get in ahead of others. I watched and photographed this long-billed curlew this morning for a very long time. A picture i liked better showed him with his beak wide open and his tongue showing, but not actually preening -- I caught him twice in that pose. His lengthy activity went on for quite awhile, after which he dozed off. C&C, please.
Hi Wendell With a find like this try working your way around the bird to ge on sun angle. Will make all the difference in the world !!! Without heavy use of flash will be difficult to make this one work !!! You did really well exposure wise with the back lit situation !!!
Hi Wendell,
I like the basic composition, and the placement of your subject in frame, but you are fighting Mr. Sun; and guess who won the fight???:D You photographed the bird with the sun coming at you at a 45 degree angle, very harsh light, this is why you have the shadow cast. I would also clone out the oof dirt in the background, which is very distracting; my eyes keep going there. Mr. Forns gave you very good advise. Before you take the image, look at you light, follow the light; always photograph with the sun at your back...
