As my Dad will tell you, I usually am not a wildlife photographer, mostly because I need to learn more. That said, this is my first post to Bird Photographers and I am hoping to hone my skills. This guy posed for me down in Forsythe Wildlife Refuge in Brigantine, NJ
Hey Mike,
A great big welcome to our BPN family. Your composition and capture is very nice, I like it. There are a few things that we need to look at here. The image is a bit under exposed (on the dark side), the whites on the bird look a little hot, blown out details, the subject is too centered in the frame. and you have little details in the eye area. I did a few modifications to your image. I first extended the water to the right of the frame to off center the bird, I toned down the hot spots, gave you more details in the eyes; and sprinkled selective sharpening in the eye and bill area. Finally I brightened the water and trimmed the grass blades from around the bird. See if you like...Not bad for you first post...good show...looking forward to seeing more of your images...and again, welcome to the family...:D:cool:
Welcome Mike. Don't have much else to say that Gus did not cover. Just wanted to say that I wish my first post was as good as yours my friend.
Congrats,
I like the base image Did get a good head angle and position in frame.... did leave room for the virtual feet. Great suggestions by Gus Hopping to see lots more !!!
Hello Mike,
Big welcome from the UK!! I like your first post a lot - well done! This site is a great learning resource, and don't be afraid to comment on other people's work - you will learn even more that way!!
Regards,
Nicki
Thanks everyone for the welcome. Usually the birds I shoot most are made of metal, but I am learning a lot from just perusing the site here and expanding my horizons. Gus, thanks for the edits and suggestions. I've never done the expanding canvas thing to get more in the photo. I have a SEVERE eversion to cropping, so that looks like a neat trick to learn. I always thought the image could use something more in the brightness/contrast area, but never thought of the selective sharpening. So much to learn, so little time to learn it. I am very glad my Dad convinced me to check this site out, tho. I am learning more here than at my other site right now!!!
It is our pleasure Mike. Thats just it...we want you to learn and get better and better; and most important, you having fun at the same time. Here at BPN, we are a family, and we help each other out. Looking forward to seeing more of your work...
